Hi! My name is Joel and I play the piano, sing, compose, and teach the noble and ancient art of musicking.

Music is a weird, wonderful, and very deep way to celebrate and explore the mysteries of Being. I love jazz and improvisation and these practices have nurtured me most of my creative life. I also love exercise, martial arts, food, cinema, reading and writing, long aimless walks, photography, meditation, philosophy, and above all, human relationships––which all other activities are ultimately undertaken to enrich!

Here's some info on my most recent major project:

The Five Elements

I recently released an album of solo piano works inspired by the Five Elements of Traditional Chinese Medicine. This diagnostic tool (which was also used to make sense of natural cycles of transformation and decay) forms the basis of a personality archetype system developed by Carey Davidson, from which I also drew a great deal of inspiration. I launched this album at a sold-out concert at the Melbourne Recital Centre on my 30th birthday in 2025.

You can listen to a sample of the album below. You can also purchase or stream the whole thing on Bandcamp, which I believe is an exemplary way to access and share music. This album is not currently on other streaming platforms, although some of my earlier albums are. This inconsistency stems from a personal ambivalence about the whole notion of subscription-based streaming with which I'm still grappling!

If you'd like to come see me play, the most reliable time and place is 8:30-11pm on a Wednesday night at 201 Brunswick St, Fitzroy. I have a residency there with a band called the Rookies at a bar called the Rooks Return which has been going a little over ten years now. We play jazz and improvised music and it's fun and free and I'd love for you to come and say hi!
